JLPT Test Day: What to Expect & Last-Minute Tips

The JLPT itself is predictable — 4 sections, printed time table, same rules in every country. What varies is your stress and preparation habits. Here's the day, dissected.

The schedule (JLPT runs on Japanese time, everywhere)

Time Segment
12:00–13:00 Check-in, find your desk, turn off all electronics
13:05–13:50 Language Knowledge (Vocabulary) — kanji reading, orthography, fill-in, paraphrase
~14:00–18:10 Grammar + Reading (levels differ; breaks in between)
~15:40–16:10 Break (you leave the room — no peeking at phone)
~16:40–18:10 Listening — audio plays twice per item; you answer in between

N5 is much shorter (finishes ~16:30). N1 runs the full day.

What to bring

What gets confiscated or marked

The last-week checklist

  1. Simulate the full test timing — sit for the real duration once this week
  2. Review every marked kanji from your mistake notebook — don't learn new kanji this week
  3. Confirm seat number + venue on the voucher — test centers are larger than you think; some are separate buildings
  4. Plan your train — arrive 60 minutes early; doors close 5 minutes before each section
  5. Prepare snacks + lunch — you can't leave between sections and return

Section tactics

The night before

No flashcards. No new grammar. Sleep 7+ hours — memory consolidation is what makes the last 3 weeks count.
