Cheap Eats in Tokyo: 1000+ Restaurants Under ¥1,000

Tokyo has a reputation for being expensive. It isn't — if you know where to look. Lunch is the secret: many restaurants in Tokyo run a cheap lunch menu ranging from ¥500 to ¥1,999, often the same food they serve at dinner for twice the price.

The ¥1,000 Lunch Rule

💡 Tip: Lunch is cheaper. Many restaurants in Tokyo have a cheap lunch menu ranging from ¥500 to ¥1,999. So try to get that deal!

We compiled a researched list of 1,000+ Tokyo restaurants with lunch menus under ¥1,000 — izakaya, ramen shops, seafood places, yakitori stands, creative cuisine and more. Every entry includes address, operating hours, payment methods and budget category.

The Local Food Map

The following map is a special exception: instead of the cheapest options, it showcases local Japanese foods from across the country — regional specialties you should try at least once.

Highlights from the ¥1,000 list

Type What you get Typical price
Teishoku (定食) Set meal: rice, miso soup, main, pickles ¥700–¥1,000
Ramen + gyoza Bowl + 3–5 dumplings ¥700–¥1,000
Izakaya lunch Small plates + rice ¥800–¥1,000
Udon / Soba Fresh noodle bowl ¥500–¥800
Donburi Rice bowl (beef, pork, tuna...) ¥450–¥900
Onigiri + soup Convenience-store classic ¥300–¥500

Avoid these budget traps

⚠️ Skip these if you're on a budget: animal cafés (with a few exceptions), Robot Restaurant and other overly touristy "Cool Japan" venues, maid cafés (expect ~¥2,000 for 30 minutes), and any place that uses people on the street to lure you in.

For panoramic views: Tokyo Skytree costs ¥3,000+ and involves queues — the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observation deck is free, opens early and late, and the line moves fast.
